Knowing how to “make small talk” is an important skill to develop in spoken English. “Small talk” basically means to talk about simple topics that don’t make anyone uncomfortable. It is very light conversation. Sometimes we do this to be polite and “make conversation”. We don’t really care about what we’re talking about, we just want to avoid an “awkward silence”. If you go on a blind date for example, you may be a little uncomfortable in the beginning. It really helps ease the tension if you are good at making small talk. Things like talking about the weather or talking about holiday plans or your favorite foods are all examples of small talk.
